In the early 1960’s this club was formed in the village. Paddy O’Reilly of Ballyneary) now living in Belturbet) and Vincent Bartley of Annagh were among its members. At the time there was a competitive clay pigeon shoot fixture for the Cavan area held in ‘Myles bottom’, formerly our local football field. Among those who participated along with Paddy and Vincent were Ned McKiernan, George Maloney, George Brady, Ned Glancy, and the Bredin Brothers, Victor and Onslow. Other locations that the locals visited for these ‘area shoots’ were as follows: Ballyconnell, Ballymacgovern, Ballinamore and Cornafean. The clay pigeon target was usually set at 30ft high, with a range of 30ft distance.
From 1980 Paddy O’Reilly qualified each year successively for seventeen years, to represent Ireland at senior level in a 30 man team in the double barreled competition. The sports representative body is the I.C.P.S.A. i.e. Irish Clay Pigeon Shoot Association.
Paddy won the Ulster single barrel competition and he was awarded a gold medal for the record he set by scoring 100 hits from 100 shots. Paddy also shot in the ‘Grand American Tournament’ for 5 years. This event was held in Dayton, Ohio, where over 200 traps were set up on a one mile track.
